Importance of UV Protection in Eyewear

Protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation.

Many people are more aware now of the risks of sunburn and skin cancer from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. But did you know UV can also harm your eyes?  Long term exposure to the sun’s UV rays has been linked to eye damage such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and growths called pingueculae and pterygia.

How can you protect your eyes?

1. Wear quality sunglasses. Sunglasses are not just a stylish accessory. They can protect our eyes from UV damage. And nobody is too young to wear protective eyewear.  It is estimated that about 50-80 percent of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18. So it is important that parents teach their children how to enjoy the sun safely.

2. When ordering eyeglasses, consider photochromic lenses which are also known by the brand name, Transitions. These special lenses are clear indoors but darken in response to UV when outdoors. They do not darken inside the car as the windshield is already UV protected.

3. If photochromic lenses are not what you are looking for, consider ordering polycarbonate lenses. These are impact resistant clear lenses that offer UV protection.

Your eyecare provider and optician can help you choose the best lenses for your needs. Be sure to see your optometrist at least every two years for a comprehensive eye exam. This is a good way to monitor your eye health and keep track of advances in eye protection.
