National Night Out Brings Awareness for a Safe Community

The City of Calabasas along with the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station wants citizens to participate in National Night Out this Tuesday.

From 7-10 p.m., the community is encouraged to participate by locking their doors, turning on outside lights and spending the evening outside with friends and neighbors.

Though the city has nothing planned to commemorate the program, sheriff's officials hope to bring awareness to the community.

"We do this more symbolically," said Dep. Shawn Brownell.

The idea is to go out, visit friends, take walks and to make it a fun experience, he said.

NNO has proven to be an effective and enjoyable program which promotes neighborhood awareness and police-community partnerships in an effort to keep the country safe, according to the Calabasas City website

The concept was originally introduced in 1984 as “America’s Night Out Against Crime," according to the NNO website. It began an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, the website said.
