Mountain Restorations Trust Hosts Teen Writing Workshop

Mountains Restoration Trust will hold a writing workshop for high school students hosted by local journalist and author, Penelope Grenoble.

In the nature writing workshop, students will learn how to write evocative essays about social and environmental issues. They will learn five steps for turning out a finished piece of writing using nature as an inspiration, explore feelings, review and critique each other’s work and share notes about the writing process.

“If they enjoy nature and the outdoors, writing is a way to express its value ... and provide words that MRT can share with its members and prospective members,” Grenoble said.

Participants will earn 10 community service hours and their articles will be published in MRT’s Nature Writing Anthology.

Grenoble said the trust promotes responsible living in communities bordering open spaces. She may host a similar class for adults in the fall.

“The MRT Writing Workshop is a perfect opportunity to learn to write in service of a cause from a professional writer, with an eye toward publication,” said MRT’s Laura Peters.

The four-session program will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting July 2 at the Masson House at Headwaters Corner on Mulholland Highway in Calabasas. A $25 materials fee is due at registration. For an application, contact lpeters@mountainstrust.org or visit www.mountainstrust.org.
