Cancer Fundraiser Held at Calabasas Country Club

Golfers help raise almost $20,000 for two charities on Friday.

A fundraiser at the on Friday helped raise more than $20,000 to help fight cancer.

Proceeds from the 114-person tournament are to go toward benefiting the Arnold Palmer Foundation for prostate cancer research and We Spark, a San Fernando Valley-based cancer support center

Participant Margie Sobel of Granada Hills said two of her family members have been affected by cancer. She added that a tournament was a great way to raise money and get club members get to know one another.

"I hope that they do it more often, it's a nice way to get the members to get out and mix," she said.

It was the first time that the men's and women's golf teams at the Calabasas Country Club worked together to put on a tournament. Such a collaboration is most likely to happen again said Scott Anderholt, president of the men's club.

"Based on the success we've had this year with the overhwleming response, it appears that both the men's and women's club would want to do this again next year for sure," he said.

The winning group was made up of Mike Sidoti, Bobby Pluth, David Salzman, Darren Thorpe, Scott Freeman and David Patton. They had a score of 94.
