Line in the Sand: Viewpoint Looks to Win Baseball Playoff Game in Desert

Local sports: The Patriots face second-seeded Desert Christian today in a Div. VI quarterfinal in Lancaster.

The challenge is on for baseball team today in a Southern Section Division VI quarterfinal against high-powered Desert Christian at Rawley Duntley Park in Lancaster. First pitch is 3:15 p.m.

Returning section finalist Desert Christian (22-5) has won 15 in a row, and the Knights have scored 10 runs or more in each of the past four games, including a 13-1 win Tuesday over Rosamond in the second round.

“Desert Christian is a very good team with a lot of talent,” Viewpoint pitcher/first baseman Tyler Sprague said. “But I think if our team continues to play solid defense with good pitching, I really think we can come out with the win. We’re ready for the challenge.”

Most impressive about Viewpoint’s playoff run is the Patriots are doing it without Sprague on the mound, as the junior left-hander has been resting a sore arm, though he could be available in relief today, coach Frank Pontello said.

“I like the way we’ve been progressing as a team,” Sprague said.

Another challenge for Viewpoint (21-5) could be the wind. It can be gusty in the Antelope Valley, and that can make the conditions tough if you’re not used to it.

“It’s supposed to be blowing pretty good,” Pontello said.

Right-hander Alex Pachino (5-2, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to start for Viewpoint.

“I made a last-minute decision last game to hold Pachino for today, so he should be very fresh,” Pontello said.

This is the second time in a row Viewpoint is playing a school named Desert Christian. On Tuesday, the Patriots defeated Desert Christian of Bermuda Dunes 4-1, as Pachino came on to pitch the final out for the save. Freshman Jack Leonard got the win, and Sprague was 2 for 2 with an RBI.

CALABASAS FOOTBALL TEAM A HIT EVEN WITHOUT PADS

football team conducted its inaugural Black & Gold event, including a seven-on-seven scrimmage and a strength competition, and first-year coach Christian Pierce said he liked what he saw.

“It was really good, a good turnout, and the kids had a great time,” Pierce said. “I thought in the scrimmage we looked good on both sides of the ball. The starting offense looked good, and the starting defense looked good. We were pleased with our execution, and there were minimal mistakes on offense.”
