Errors Costly in Coyotes' Loss At Alemany

Calabasas coach said, 'It was like the Twilight Zone out there' as defensive lapses negate some solid pitching in Valley Invitational Baseball League loss.

When a team makes as many mistakes as Calabasas High did on Thursday in a Valley Invitational Baseball League game at Mission Hills Alemany, winning becomes extremely difficult.

The Coyotes committed error after error in the bottom of the first inning, failed to correct the mishaps as they game wore on, and as a result, they ended up losing, 3-2, to the Indians.

"It was like the twilight zone out there, our defense made so many weird plays today, way too many miscues on our part,'' Coyotes coach Ed Edsall said. "We had mishaps on plays that we've made a million times before and will probably make a million times again. We couldn't take care of business, plain and simple.''

Calabasas (3-8) failed to muster any offense in the top of the first inning. The Indians (7-6), on the other hand, had success early on.

Peter Van Gansen and Ryan Paramo reach based on errors in the bottom of the first inning for Alemany. Two batters later, Ethan Ullman also got on following another error by the mistake prone Coyotes.

By the time the inning was over, they trailed by a pair of runs.

Things didn't get much better either.

In the bottom of the second inning, Van Gansen bunted for a single and proceeded to steal second and third base. He ended up coming around to score on a Paramo sacrifice fly to extend the Indians' advantage to 3-0.

"We got into trouble right off the bat and never recovered,'' Edsall. "It was one of those days, all teams have them, and it was our turn.''

Calabasas got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Travis Cassidy got a base hit and scored on a Trevor Weiss ground ball.

An inning later, the Coyotes scored another run, but it was not enough. Ultimately, the early errors were too much to overcome.

Cassidy did his job on the mound for the Coyotes. He pitched well, giving up three hits in five innings.

"Cassidy was great, he threw one hell of a game,'' Edsall said. "It's not his fault we lost. If he would have had some run support, things might have been different. Bottom line, we didn't play very well, didn't get things done.

"Some of what you saw today was the dog days of summer starting to take their toll on the kids. In that sense, we're not terribly discouraged with this setback. We're not going to panic, not by any stretch of the imagination.

"We're going to put this game behind us quickly and move on. After the game, I spoke to the guys and told them that I was going to give them a couple of days off. Hopefully, a long, relaxing weekend will refresh my guys by Monday.''
