Calabasas Great For Five Innings, Lose It In Sixth

North Hollywood Campbell Hall scores four runs in the sixth inning to take Valley Invitational Baseball League game

The Calabasas High baseball team played about as well as it possibly could during on Monday against North Hollywood Campbell Hall.

For five innings, anyway.

Things fell apart for the Coyotes in the top of the sixth as the visiting Vikings scored four runs en route to a 6-4 victory in a Valley Invitational Baseball League game.

"That was the game right there, giving up a four spot late in the game, that was a tough way to lose it,'' Coyotes coach Ed Edsall said. "We never ended up recovering after the rally they had against us.''

The Coyotes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Camhi led off with a solo home run. Then, with the bases loaded, Trevor Weiss picked up an RBI when he walked and Jordan Bass scored.

Campbell Hall answered in the top of the fourth inning. Brett Lake scored on a relatively innocent ground ball off the bat of Adam Ehrlich against Calabasas starter Max Shifman to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Vikings then tied the score at 2 in the top of the fifth inning when Jeremy Pang scored on a Larry Brown sacrifice fly.

The Coyotes responded in the bottom half of the fifth. Camhi walked to start the rally and then stole second base. Ben Vizvary stepped up to the plate and delivered a base hit and Camhi came around to score.

At that point, Calabasas appeared to have the momentum again.

The Vikings, however, scored four runs in the sixth inning to take what proved to be an insurmountable 6-3 lead over the Coyotes.

Calabasas had one last chance to comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Anthony DiCosimo reached on an error. Camhi followed with a flyout and Vivary walked. Bass singled, scoring DiCosimo to keep the rally alive. But the threat ended when Shifman struck out.

"They came up with some big hits and we didn't,'' Edsall said. "It'd be nice to win them all, but that's not possible.''

Bass was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Camhi also had a pair of hits. Vizvary reached base twice, on walks. So did Weiss.  Shifman gave up four runs, three of which were earned, in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out a batter.

Brett Bachelis replaced Shifman, but didn't fare much better. He gave up two runs on two hits in less than an inning on the mound. Allan Clark finished the game, striking out two in the sixth and seventh innings.
