Bay Laurel Gets New Principal from Down the Coast

Jacqueline O'Sullivan comes from Redondo Beach Unified.

Following a comprehensive search, the Las Virgenes Unified School District, its Board of Directors and its leadership team proudly announce that Jacqueline O’Sullivan has been selected as the incoming principal for Bay Laurel Elementary  School, beginning in the 2014-2015 school year.

O’Sullivan comes to Las Virgenes Unified with 25 years of experience in education. As principal, she will assume the day-to-day responsibilities of the supervising site administrator, focusing on leading student achievement at the Pre-K through 5th at Laurel Elementary, which is located in Calabasas.

Currently, O’Sullivan is principal at Washington Elementary in the Redondo Beach Unified School District, where she has held the position for the past three years. There she has worked as the chief instructional leader, facilitating the implementation of Common Core curriculum and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and has been responsible for launching a Spanish Dual Immersion Program.

O’Sullivan has managed and supervised construction processes, site budgets, professional development workshops, student enrichment programs, academic intervention and discipline programs and technology acquisition and implementation. 

She has also developed unique programs which fostered increased school/parent/community connections.

In addition to her role as principal, O’Sullivan is a highly respected adjunct professor at Concordia University where she teaches courses in Educational Leadership, Curriculum Design and Instruction, and Schools as Diverse Learning Communities. She has been an active contributor to various professional educational committees and is the recipient of numerous awards.

O’Sullivan has been honored as Redondo Beach Unified School District’s Administrator of the Year, Association of California School Administrators Principal of the Year and Association of California School Administrators State Principal of the Year.

O’Sullivan began her career as an elementary school teacher, working in the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Lawndale Unified School District. Over the years, she also assumed roles as curriculum and staff developer, assistant principal and then principal at Birney Elementary of Redondo Beach Unified School District, before taking on her current position at Washington Elementary.

O’Sullivan received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education/Psychology from State University of New York at Potsdam and earned her Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Loyola Marymount University, where she graduated with honors.

Las Virgenes Unified School District’s Superintendent Daniel Stepenosky, welcomed her and said, “Jacqueline O’Sullivan has an outstanding reputation as a student-focused educational leader. Her extensive experience in Common Core curriculum and professional development made her the ideal choice for us.
