Fred Gaines, Lucy Martin Sworn In on Council; James Bozajian Elected Mayor

Council holds its annual reorganization ceremony on Wednesday.

Fred Gaines and Lucy Martin were sworn in as the newest members of the on Wednesday, and James Bozajian took the mayor's oath.

Gaines was sworn in by Robert Hertzberg, speaker emeritus of the California State Assembly, and Martin was sworn in by Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

The two new council members replace , who opted last December not to run for reelection.

Gaines said he will work to maintain and improve the quality of local life, including the environment, public safety and the library.

Martin pledged to be as available as she can to her constituents.

The council then voted in unison to elect Bozajian as the new mayor of Calabasas for a one-year term.

Bozajian was sworn in for his fourth term as mayor by Washburn, who stepped down from the council that evening after a 20-year tenure.

The new mayor said he will continue to promote "slow-growth policies" and work to heal the wounds among the constituency that were caused by the recent contenious election.
