City Swears in Council Without Appointing New Mayor Pro Tem

The City Council voted to table the nomination for mayor pro tem at Wednesday night's city council reorganization, effectively snubbing next-in-line Lucy Martin.

On the agenda, Wednesday night's city council meeting was a by-the-book reorganization until it came time to nominate the mayor pro tem.

Following Councilmember Fred Gaines' swearing in as Calabasas' new mayor, Gaines asked the council members to nominate the mayor pro tem, a position which was supposed to have gone to Councilmember Lucy Martin.

However, after a marked silence, Councilmember James Bozajian moved to table the nomination. There was no second at the time.

Martin then asked if she could nominate herself, which she did.

Following some discussion, Bozajian again moved to table the discussion, which was passed 4-1, with a "no" vote from Martin.

Martin remarked, "You should be ashamed of yourselves," before the meeting was adjourned.

During this year's elections, Martin had supported challenger Jody Thomas, and the incumbents had been vocal about Thomas and her supporters' harsh campaign tactics.
