Calabasas Looks to Join Call For Tighter Gun Controls

The proposed action comes as the nation continues to mourn the loss of 20 students and six teachers in a mass shooting in Newtown, CT, in December.

The Calabasas City Council is expected to join in the call to the federal government to reduce gun violence in America and prevent future mass shootings like the one that killed 20 students and six educators last month in Newtown, CT.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Calabasas City Hall.

The council will vote on whether to support the Fix Gun Checks Act, proposed legislation in Congress that would close legal loopholes and require more stringent background checks on firearm sales.

The council will also consider supporting the reinstatement of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban; and call on the California congressional delegation to support legislation proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

In the wake of the Newtown, CT, shootings, Feinstein proposed a bill that would stop the sale, transfer, importation and manufacturing of assault weapons as well as large ammunition magazines, strips and drums that hold more than 10 rounds.

A bipartisan coalition of more than 800 mayors, including in neighboring Malibu, and more than 700,000 Americans have already called on President Barack Obama to put stricter gun controls in place.
