The Top 5 Crimes of 2010

A tragic death and high-profile burglaries are among some of the year's biggest headlines in Calabasas.

Calabasas may not be known for a high crime rate, but in the 2010, the city saw its fair share of big headlines, from mysterious deaths to high-profile burglaries.

Here is our look back at the five of the most notable crimes of the year.

1. The tragic death of Mitrice Richardson

The of 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson, who had been reported for 11 months, were discovered at an abandoned marijuana farm in Monte Nido on Aug. 11. Richardson had been arrested on the evening of Sept. 16 for failing to pay a restaurant bill at Geoffrey's in Malibu.

She was released without access to a vehicle, phone or money, and was believed to have been suffering from bipolar disorder when she .

A cause of death has yet to be determined and the sheriff's department's Office of Independent Review is investigating whether deputies unlawfully moved Richardson's body before the coroner arrived on scene.

2. A string of generator thefts

It all began sometime in mid June.  was stolen from a construction site in the 28000 block of Agoura Road after hours.

In July, a  from a construction site on Mulholland Highway after someone cut a hole in a fence to gain entry to a yard, moved a bulldozer, and broke into a storage unit that contained the generator.

It happened again in late August when a from a 140-acre ranch on Las Virgenes Road.

And most recently, a  in late October.

3. Diamonds are a burglar's best friend

A $30,000 diamond ring was stolen from a residence on the 24000 block of Lorena Drive while the homeowner was out of town.

The burglary occurred sometime between 10 a.m. on Aug. 23 and 12 p.m. on Aug. 30, according to deputies.

The 18-karat yellow gold and platinum ring containing one 2.02-karat marquise diamond and two trilliant diamonds weighing .95 karats was located in the victim's master bedroom.

The victim said she did not want to say who had access to her home while she was out of town until proof of who committed the theft is found.

However, the victim did want to file a grand theft report in case her stolen ring turns up on the Internet or at a pawn shop.

4. Dude, where's my bike?

A motorcycle was stolen from the 25000 block of Prado De Las Peras after a man claiming an interest in purchasing the bike made off with it during a test drive.

The victim listed his red Ducati 999 for sale for $10,500 on Craigslist and was subsequently contacted by a potential buyer who identified himself as Shawn.

The suspect stopped by the victim's home on June 5 around 1:40 p.m. to test drive the motorcycle. The suspect handed the victim an envelope that supposedly contained $8,500 in cash.

The suspect also handed his car keys to the victim in exchange for permission to test drive the Ducati.

The victim instructed the suspect to stay within the gated community during the test drive. Five minutes had gone by and the suspect had failed to return with the motorcycle.

After the suspect left for the test drive, the victim opened the envelope to find nothing but newspaper cut down to the size of dollar bills.

The victim also found the suspect's passport in the man's vehicle.

deputies were contacted shortly afterward and responded by canvasing the community, but failed to find the missing motorcycle.

A guard at the community's security gate reported that he did see a man leave the area on a red motorcycle.

Sheriff's deputies also searched local gas stations, but did not find the suspect or the motorcycle.

The suspect is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighting about 155 pounds with dark hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing green cargo pants, a dark shirt,  dark helmet and black gloves.

5: No game two for you

One unlucky Lakers fan had his April 20 playoff tickets nabbed from his car on April 19.

The victim had parked his 2008 BMW X5 at around 3 p.m. for baseball practice. When he returned  his black leather Kenneth Cole briefcase, with two Lakers tickets inside valued at $1,500 and a Blackberry charger, were missing. The victim had left his vehicle unlocked.
