Lost Hiker Rescued in Malibu Creek State Park

The operation occurs near Goats Buttes.

The following information is from the LASD Malibu Search and Rescue team:

At approximately 6 p.m. yesterday evening, LASD Malibu Search and Rescue received a call of two stranded hikers in Malibu Creek State Park. Upon arrival at the park, team members contacted State Park Rangers who were able to visually locate one stranded male hiker on the cliffside of one of Goats Buttes. The Rangers had their SUV spotlight trained on the hiker who was unable to go back up the mountain and clearly unable to go down the mountain because he was perched on a sheer cliff. Two 3 person teams of Malibu SAR personnel climbed up the mountain, set a lowering system, lowered a rescuer to the victim who then secured the victim in a harness and brought him up to the top of the cliff. The two SAR field teams, aided by rope systems that were set on the way up the mountain, descended with the hiker. The 35 year old male hiker from Los Angeles was uninjured. No copter was used because of the combination of dense cloud cover, darkness and rain. A second hiker was able to make his way to safety prior to rescuers arrival.  The rescue was completed at 10:20 p.m.
