Justin Bieber's alleged battery case involving an altercation with a paparazzi photographer is being handed over to the L.A. County District Attorney's office, TMZ reports.
Sheriff's deputies have reportedly decided to refer the case to prosecutors, though an investigation is still ongoing, according to the celebrity news website.
On Sunday, the 18-year-old Canadian pop star was leaving with girlfriend Selena Gomez when he was swarmed by paparazzi, according to a release from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.
Bieber allegedly had a "physical altercation" with photographer Jose Sarros, who phoned 911 after the scuffle and was admitted to the hospital with chest pains.
The singer had already left the shopping center by the time deputies arrived.
TMZ reports that deputies still want to talk with Bieber, but he's now in Norway. The website also says that it's typical for police to refer high-profile cases to county prosecutors.
If the case goes to trial and Bieber is convicted, he could face up to six months in jail, according to TMZ.
