Family-Friendly Activities to Ring In the New Year

Check out these fun ideas to keep your children occupied during the winter break.

1. 

  • Where/When: , the rest of this week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Why go: If you're working during the kids' vacation or if they're just bored, why not send them over to winter camp for a day or two? Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to attend and enjoy days full of crafts, games, entertainment and fun.

2. 

  • Where/When: , Saturday at 10 a.m.
  • Why go: The weather is supposed to be great this weekend, so gather the family and take in a healthy does of nature on this docent-led walk along Malibu Creek. The two-hour walk will give participants a quick education about the area's animals, flora, fauna and film history.
  • Pricing: Free.
  • Ideal for: Families with children of all ages.

3. Kids' Fun Zone

  • Where/When: The Janss Mall, Saturday, 12-3 p.m.
  • Why go: Start New Year's Eve off by heading to the Janss Mall for free crafts, games and entertainment for the little ones. While you're there, be sure to take advantage of special VIP shopping discounts, available only to Kids' Zone participants and their parents.
  • Pricing: Free.
  • Ideal for: Families with children age 10 and under.

4. Mini-Golf

  • Where/When: Golf N' Stuff, daily, hours vary.
  • Why go: If you're looking for a great way to keep the kids entertained for a whole day, head north to Ventura for a day of mini-golf, rides, games, food and more. 
  • Pricing: Pricing varies by attraction.
  • Ideal for: Families with children of all ages.

5. The Rose Parade Floats, Up Close

  • Where/When: Sierra Madre and Washington boulevards in Pasadena. Monday, 1-5 p.m.; Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Why go: You've seen those gorgeous floats on TV—why not pack up the family and admire them in real life? Every year after the Rose Parade, the floats are on display for the public to view up close.
  • Pricing: $10 for adults, children age 5 and under are free.
  • Ideal for: Families with children of all ages.
