The sun will set on another Passover, yet what to do with the common practice of leaving wine out on the porch or offering wine to those in the community? We all have heard about and needing special permission from the city of Calabasas to dispense wine, but what about the thousands of Passover celebrants offering wine on Friday and Saturday? It is an unfounded rumor that the City of Calabasas is considering charging a corkage fee to all those who leave wine for Elijah or members of the public who are invited to the home for the Seder. Apparently Elijah is also in arrears for this fee given that he has been visiting homes for over 2,000 years. There is also no truth to the rumor that Elijah has sought rehab for all the wine he has accepted over the years.
I don't know whether Starbucks will be offering a glass of red wine for Elijah or whether he prefers a Cafe Mocha, kosher for Passover, of course. Elijah should have his wine permit ready, otherwise I can envision a knock on the door with the sheriffs looking for an elderly gentlemen in his robes, hoisting a few goblets on his way through the neighborhood. Perhaps we can mark his trail with lamb's blood or if PETA prefers, with red food dye, but not Number 2 or 5. Yes, even Passover and Elijah may not be immune from the reach of government this holiday season as Calabasas seeks to monitor wine sales in the community.
I suspect there will be no checkpoint on Calabasas Road for Elijah and that he will pass deftly into the night, and then again, they are closing the Malibu court, so he could avoid arraignment in any event. A Happy Passover to all and whine no more.
