You may have noticed that the picture usually found at the very top of this page is different today. There are reasons for that: One reason has to do with profound sadness. The other is about healing or, at least, compassion and kindness.

What you see in the photo is a paper patchwork of memorial notes in Newtown, Connecticut. They were pulled together shortly after the elementary school shooting there. Last year, well-wishers from all over the world came to Newtown Patch by the thousands. "Dear Connecticut, know that you are not alone tonight," one wrote.

One year later, it seems fitting that Newtown knows again that it’s not alone. We invite you to take a second and share a "Note for Newtown." This is a special section on Newtown Patch where you can let the people in that town know they’re still in your thoughts.

If you're not sure what to leave in a note, here are a few suggestions:

We have a few rules for this section on Newtown Patch, which we will enforce this week with a zero-tolerance policy:

  • No politics
  • No fighting
  • No selling

If you’d like to do any of these three things, you have the whole rest of the Internet at your disposal. Thank you!
