OK, so you’ve got a frog infestation. The Orkin guy confirms it and offers to get to work solving the problem. But you interrupt him and tell him, “No actually, can you come back tomorrow? I want one more night of a house full of frogs.”

Normal?

And yet Pharaoh does just that in this week’s Torah portion. Moses says “When do you want the plague of frogs to end?” And his majesty says, “Tomorrow.” Why?

Pharaoh says to himself, “I’m no dummy. I know this infestation ain’t coming from no G-d. It’s a result of the alignment of the stars and Moses must have insider astrological data telling him that the plague is about to end, so he comes challenging me to have him stop it. So let me ruin his clever plan by telling him to stop it tomorrow. Boom.”

Of course Moses agrees and G-d stops the plague the following day, foiling Pharaoh’s prediction. Yes Pharaoh steels his nerves and says to himself, “Tomorrow is yet another day; the fight goes on.”

Your relationships are your kingdom and you are king.

Look at the ruinous habits of this ruinous king who brought down his own mighty Egyptian empire and learn reverse lessons. He has myopic visions that guarantee that tomorrow will be exactly like today. He ignores the G-d-given gift of a fresh start and schemes to perpetuate his ego-addiction in the morning. He plots today how to be even worse tomorrow.

Talk about not “using only as directed”!

Night, sleep and a new day were thoughtfully, lovingly created for the sole purpose of helping us change. Without “a new day” our failures would depress us, overwhelm us and sink us and our kingdoms. Our Designer infused us with better and worse angels and knew that we’d have our good days and also moments of weakness. To help us overcome and move on from those embarrassing moments, He created the idea of new beginnings.

When the sun rises, our hopes and dreams rise with it. Even hopes and dreams that died yesterday are resurrected and renewed by the light and warmth of the new day and its new power.

Never give up.

In Chabad there’s a saying: “Before you sleep, remember your day and promise yourself – tomorrow will be better than today.”

So tonight, sleep sound, sleep well and sleep deep. And then tomorrow, rise like a lion. A shiny new world awaits you!
