Triple Digit Heat Expected for Next 3 Days

Sweltering temperatures combined with low humidity will begin in the Southland today, raising fears of fire.

A three-day period of often sweltering temperatures combined with low humidity will begin in the Southland today, raising fears of fire, National Weather Service forecasters said.

There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and this evening in the Antelope Valley and across the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, they said.

"The main threats from the thunderstorms will be dangerous cloud-to- ground lightning and gusty winds,'' according to an NWS advisory.

NWS forecasters said a weak offshore flow combined with "a very warm air mass" will heat up the region today and Wednesday and produce north-to-northwest winds of between 15 and 25 miles per hour below favored passes and canyons.

"The main impact of the offshore flow will be to produce very hot temperatures across the valleys and coastal plain,'' according to the NWS advisory.

It said triple-digit temperatures would be common across the valleys and foothills today and Wednesday, with some areas soaring as high as 107 degrees Wednesday afternoon.

"Triple-digit heat is now expected to continue across some inland areas through Thursday," it said.

The advisory said that because of the hot, dry offshore flow, "there
will be a heightened fire-weather concern across Southern California through Wednesday. With fuel moisture levels continuing to decrease across the area, the expected weather conditions will only exacerbate the potential for fires."

The weather service urged area residents to avoid outdoor activity and reminded motorists never to leave people or pets in enclosed vehicles during the daytime heat, even with windows cracked open.

The NWS forecast highs today of 80 in Avalon; 81 in Newport Beach and at LAX; 91 in Long Beach; 92 on Mount Wilson; 94 in downtown L.A.; 95 in Anaheim and San Gabriel; 97 in Burbank; 98 in Pasadena and Palmdale; 99 in Lancaster; 102 in Woodland Hills and 103 in Newhall.

In several areas, high will be around 5 degrees higher Wednesday before beginning to come down Thursday and dropping precipitously on Friday, when maximum temperatures in some communities will be as high as 10 degrees lower than today.
