Man Suffers Head Injury After 60-Foot Fall in Malibu Creek State Park

The 21-year-old Chatsworth man remains hospitalized.

A 21-year-old Chatsworth man was hospitalized with head injuries Sunday after after tumbling 60 feet onto vehicle-sized boulders while climbing in Malibu Creek State Park, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department located the injured hiker at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, after which he was plucked to safety by a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter crew that flew him to a nearby trauma center, said Malibu Search and Rescue Sgt. David J. Katz.

Members of the sheriff's Malibu Search and Rescue Team hiked into the park's gorge area for several hours to find the injured man's four companions --  three men and a woman ranging in age from 19 to 23 and residing in Simi Valley and Canoga Park, Katz said. They were not hurt.

The rescue concluded at 8:45 p.m., Katz said.

This was the second rescue in as many weeks in the park,'' Katz said, adding that last weekend's rescue was in the rock pool area of the park.
