Gas Prices Rise Sharply

Los Angeles County is experiencing its highest price since Nov. 16.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County Thursday recorded its largest increase since Oct. 6, rising by 3.9 cents before settling at $3.849 -- the highest price since Nov. 16.

The average price has risen 28 of the past 30 days and 32 of the past 35, including 3.3 cents on Wednesday, according to figures from the AAA and Oil
Price Information Service.

The average price is 10 cents more than one week ago, 23.1 cents higher than one month ago and 6.1 cents greater than one year ago.

The Los Angeles County average price is the second highest in the state, trailing only San Luis Obispo County, whose average is $3.867. The lowest average price is $3.586 in Modesto.

The sharp increases stem from low supplies as refineries head into their maintenance cycles and follows last week's 50 cent per gallon increase in the
cost of wholesale gasoline, according to Marie Montgomery Nordhues of the
Automobile Club of Southern California.
