5 Things You Need To Know Today: Oct. 16

Today's events include the final day of the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival, naturalist programs, a book fair and a hike.

1. Celebrate the orange fruit Calabasas is named after on the final day of the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival. Enjoy all things pumpkin-related including a pumpkin patch, a pumpkin seed spitting contest and a pumpkin pie eating contest. The $5 admission also includes a mummy wrap contest, nature shows, live music, rides, carnival games, a car show, children’s crafts, face painting, a beer garden, food trucks and more. The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Juan Bautista De Anza Park, located at 3701 Lost Hills Rd.
     
2. Learn more about the Mountain Restoration Trust’s programs today during their 30th Anniversary Open House. From 1-4 p.m. the grounds will open to the public for strolls, picnics and more. Tour a shaded stream, a native plant garden and Calabasas’ first historic landmark,  the William C. Masson House, a homestead built in the 1890s. Information on programs offered by the MRT will also be available at the free event, held at 23075 Mulholland Hwy.

3. The annual Topanga Canyon docents fall 2011 training program is open throughout today. Those interested in naturalist-education for volunteer work in the Santa Monica Mountains area are invited to the Trippet Ranch Nature Center, located in Topanga State Park at 20829 Entrada Rd. A $75 fee applies.

4. A Chaparral Elementary School Book Fair will be held today at the Barnes and Noble bookstore beginning at 9 a.m. A portion of the book Fair’s sales will go to benefit the school. In addition to raising funds, the book fair also assists teachers in devising library wish lists for students. Barnes and Noble is located at 4735 Commons Way.

5. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and trek out into the wild. Hike one of and enjoy the sunset or just the quiet.
