5 Things You Need to Know Today: Oct. 12

City Council meeting; college prep event; return of hot weather.

  1. The Calabasas City Council meets at 7 p.m. at Tonight, the council will vote on whether to tell the California Public Utilities Commission to direct local utilities to suspend the installation of "smart meters" until an opt-out program is established.
  2. A disaster preparedness class is being held on Thursday at Founders Hall in the Calabasas Library. The Calabasas Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness is leading the workshop that talks about the nine steps you and your neighbors should follow immediately after a disaster. The two-hour class begins at 6:30 p.m.
  3. A college prep event is being held at Agoura High School from 6:30 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. "College Knowledge Night" will feature a number of SAT and ACT study prep vendors.
  4. Centre Salon and Spa is selling pink bracelets in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, which kicks off in October. The $1 bracelets go toward benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
  5. Today will be hot with a high of 100, according to the National Weather Service.
