Young Entrepreneur Buys Golden Spoon

Twenty-one-year-old Adam Smith will give away free frozen yogurt this weekend to celebrate his new ownership.

Adam Smith may very well be one of the youngest business owners in Calabasas.

At 21, he bought the local frozen yogurt shop after working for the chain for five years.

Smith started from the bottom, serving up fro-yo with assorted toppings and worked his way up to manager. After saving money and getting a loan, he took the previous owner's offer to buy the shop in January.

The Sylmar resident oversees a team of six employees.

"The pressure is all on me, not on anyone else," Smith said. "That's the biggest change."

And to celebrate the new ownership, Golden Spoon will be giving away free frozen yogurt on Saturday and Sunday.

Smith attended college for a year until he decided school was not the right fit at the time, though he plans on continuing his education in the future.

He also foresees more fro-yo in his future. Smith said he'd like to open five more Golden Spoon locations down the road.

In addition to launching his career in entrepreneurship, finding time for a social life has proved to be another obstacle, Smith said.

"Most people at my age go out and party," he said. "It's hard for me not to do that I guess."
