The Dailey Method Opens in Calabasas

The grand opening included a free snack bar, free fitness classes and a push-up challenge.

More than 125 people visited exercise studio the during the weekend for its grand opening.

The studio welcomed patrons with complimentary classes, healthy sweets, sandwiches and a push-up challenge that raised funds for Dog’s Life Rescue, donating 25 cents for every push-up performed.

Owned and operated by Van Lai and Hillary Boyd, the fitness franchise—which has set up shop on the corner of Old Topanga Canyon Road and Mulholland Highway—offers classes focusing on isometric exercise and low impact core-conditioning.

“We use light weights and our own bodies for resistance,” Lai said.  “It’s very orthopedically correct and is a combination of yoga, Pilates and ballet barre work.”

Although sharing characteristics with other work-outs, Lai believes the Dailey Method to be a unique routine that balances strength training and lengthening muscles.

“It was different than what I normally do, like running or cardio,” said resident Jennifer Berger. “It’s a lot of muscle conditioning but it’s not just working out at the gym.”

There is a sequence to every class, but with room for plenty of variation, said Lai. The classes can be modified for beginners or more advanced participants, she added.

“Right now, since we’re a new studio in a new community, we’re keeping all of our classes basic, but they’re still very challenging,” Lai said.  “What we want to do is grow with the community.”

The studio with bamboo flooring provides filtered water and features a child care room, a women’s locker room, two bathrooms, a shower and a retail area.

“The community has been so welcoming,” Lai said. “Morning classes have been booked solid.”

Reservations for classes can be made by clicking here. The classes are one hour long and Lai and Boyd recommend three to four sessions a week. They also plan to add a men’s class as well as a class for teens in the future.
