Stolen Statue Returned to Business 8 Years Later [VIDEO]

Helmet House got a surprising call a few weeks ago about a bronze statue it once had on display.

A bronze statue of two people riding a motorcyle was recently returned to local business after it was reported stolen in 2003.

The Ride, made by sculptor Steve Posson, was installed by the motorcyle product company in 1997 as part of a city project to install more artwork throughout the community.

Two years after The Ride disappeared, it was replaced with an identical statue produced by Posson.

It seemed as though the original statue had vanished for good until Helmet House got a call from Posson saying it had been found.

"Eventually, it turned up at an estate sale in the Valley," said Phil Bellomy, the company's vice president.

Posson was contacted by individuals who had purchased the statue, according to a press release from Helmet House. He and the company later contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which recovered the artwork and later reopened the investigation.

Despite one of the riders missing his head, Bellomy said it's good to have the original statue back.

"What we'll probably do is mount [the statue] in its present condition, add a little plaque explaining what happened and perhaps put it on display in our lobby," he said.
