SoCal Edison to Lay off Hundreds

Management will be streamlined and some jobs outsourced.

Southern California Edison Co. plans to lay off hundreds of employees as part of a management streamlining and outsourcing of some functions, such as information technology, it was reported today.

The number of workers affected by the cuts will be "in the high hundreds," Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, chairman of the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee, said in comments reported by the Los Angeles Times. "It's pretty disappointing ... (The cuts) are not going to help" California's economy.

Padilla was briefed by his committee consultants, who said they were told that the utility expected to cut 500 in-house employees and another 400 to 500 contract workers beginning this summer, The Times reported. Most of the layoffs would be at Edison's sprawling Irwindale office complex.

The utility acknowledged in a statement its plans for cuts this summer -- including greater use of outside vendors -- but did not offer an estimate of the number of workers affected.

This seems to align with the pervasive school of business thought these days, which is all hail the holy grail of "scalability". This means many things, but generally from a business perspective, full-time employees suck. Temp employees and outsourcing rules. Business procedures should be simplified and dumbed down so that a monkey could do it, or outsourced with malice aforethought. Why? Profits. There is profit when you stop doing things that create zero to low value and focus on activities that generate revenue/value/cost controls. Not surprised by move to temps. Full time employees are more expensive to pay and administer: total compensation and administration (salary, medical insurance, vacation, holiday, sick pay, payroll, wage garnishments, taxes. With temp employees and outsourcing businesses have none of that. It's very popular to outsource certain IT services to deal with the ebb and flow of urgent projects and activity lulls. This move has little to do with poltics and everything to do with finance/economics. This kind of workforce slash and burn existed well before Obamacare/ACA.

I feel bad for the good people that will loose their jobs. The people who should loose their job is the leaders of the company that have made decisions that have caused SCE rates to be one of the highest in the country. Not long ago SCE had one of the lowest rates. There is so much waste on new SCE programs that cost millions of dollars that do nothing except help with someone's presentation.

Let's see now. LA City starts new trash program which will kill some small business and certainly result in layoffs. Now SCE going to be laying off 900 plus. Now looking too good there, SoCal.

Well, this is what they call 'progress', folks. Think about it. Not long ago they installed the 'smart meters', right? Well, with 'smart meters' you don't need meter readers, do you? So this has nothing at all to do with democrats or republicans. Let's stop going there. It's about cutting costs with technology. Remember when garbage trucks were 2 man units? I do. Those were back the days when the men manually hoisted the cans and dumped the garbage in the trucks. Well, now the trashing dumping is automated and only a driver is needed. Sorry, folks. That's called 'progress', like it or not. Those layed off garbage men and meter readers need to reinvent themselves and find other work in another industry. But let's not make this political. That's so absurd.

IRS Forced Obama Care is illegal and unconstitutional and Edison also wants to get out of the health care benefit business for their employees and force them into Obama Care or just get rid of the them.
