Organic Grocery to Anchor Shopping Center

Maddy's Market, named after the property's longtime former owner, will open at the Summit on Agoura and Lost Hills roads in October.

An organic grocery store called Maddy's Market will anchor the 70,000-square-foot Summit at Calabasas shopping center, opening its doors in October.

The announcement was made Monday on the development's Twitter feed and was followed by a news release from Cypress Realty Group, the project's leasing agent.

"Managed and run by an experienced team of specialty grocery store operators, Maddy's Market will feature the finest fresh meat and seafood, locally grown produce, gourmet prepared foods, fresh baked goods, organic and kosher grocery items, a large selection of raw foods, natural supplements, a one-of-a-kind tonic bar, and wellness clinic," the release said.

Calabasas Chamber of Commerce President Carol Washburn said an outlet for buying organic produce was welcome in the west end of town because the east side has the farmers market.

"There will be residents on the west end [of Calabasas] and residents of Agoura Hills who will use this," Washburn said.

Dollinger Properties bought the land for the project in 2006 after the 2004 death of Annalisa Maddy, who owned a home there that her husband had built in 1912.

Washburn said naming the Summit's anchor store after the property's previous owner is a nice way of honoring local history.

"I think this will draw positive attention to that place," she said. "It keeps the charm of Calabasas history alive."

Dollinger Properties did not return calls for comment.

Senor Fred, a contemporary Mexican restaurant, and Wolf Creek Brewery, a brewpub, are two other tenants that will open at the shopping center.

Space is still available, and according to a map of the Summit,  slots have been reserved for a sporting goods apparel store, an upscale hair salon, a nail salon and a coffee shop.
