Delayed Senior Apartments Project to Begin Construction

A 60-unit market-rate apartment complex for seniors will be built on Malibu Hills Road.

After a six-year delay, construction on a market-rate luxury apartment complex for seniors at 26705 Malibu Hills Road can begin as early as next week.

In 2006, the approved plans for the Horizons at Calabasas, a three-story development that sits on a 2.77-acre lot and includes 60 units for rent to tenants who are 55 or older.

The country's economic downturn left developer Dan Zaharoni with choice to halt the project, but things finally made a positive turnaround recently.

"We got financing for construction, we closed our loan two weeks ago," he said.

Fifty-seven of the units are three bedrooms, while the rest are two bedrooms, Zaharoni said. There will also be a subterranean parking level, swimming pool, jacuzzi courtyard, and three cabanas.

An optional 24-hour concierge serve will also be available and offer services such as grocery pick-up and transportation, Zaharoni said.

He said several people applied to live in one of the apartments when the project was initially slated to get off the ground, but have since withdrawn their applications.

Zaharoni said he expects to start accepting new reservations in July.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by September, 2013 he said.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the development would be built at 26705 Malibu Canyon Road. It's being built at 26705 Malibu Hills Road.
