Mureau Road Pipeline Project Begins in August

The following is a press release from the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District.

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) will soon begin installing a new 30-inch pipeline along Mureau Road and Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas. The project is part of the District’s “Backbone Improvements Program,” a multi-year capital investment initiative designed to increase system reliability now and into the future. The Mureau Road project is anticipated to be completed in May 2014.

The new pipeline will run from Mureau Road near Round Meadow Road, west to Las Virgenes Road, then south on Las Virgenes Road, and cross under U.S. 101 to connect to an existing water main near Agoura Road. The pipeline segment running beneath the freeway will be installed using a tunneling method that will not affect traffic on U.S. 101.

To reduce traffic impacts, construction hours have been set for the various segments of the project to avoid peak periods. In the event of a major incident on U.S. 101, work can be suspended until the situation is resolved. Work on the narrow two-lane segment of Mureau Road is scheduled to be done at night.

“This pipeline project is a critical component of the Backbone Improvements Program needed to provide reliable water service to the District’s customers now and well into the future," said LVMWD General Manager David W. Pedersen. "Funds for this project are already set aside; no borrowing is required and there will be no impact on future rates as a result of this work.”

The segment along Mureau and Las Virgenes Roads is the second pipeline installment for the Backbone Improvements Program. In 2012, a new pipeline was installed along sections of Agoura and Reyes Adobe Roads in Agoura Hills. Future elements include improvements to a pumping station in Westlake Village, additional equipment for the Westlake Filtration Plant and a new 5-million gallon storage tank at Las Virgenes Reservoir.
