Universal Healthcare: A Moral and Economic Imperative
Dr. Paul Song, Radiation Oncologist and Board Member of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) is keynote speaker for VIC’s Annual Labor Day Program
(CALABASAS, August 21, 2013) – Dr. Paul Song will be the featured speaker for the Valley Interfaith Council (VIC) annual Labor Day picnic and program to be held on Monday, September 2, 2013 at the Greater Community Missionary Baptist Church located at 11066 Norris Ave. in Pacoima, CA. Music and a light meal will be provided beginning at 5:30 pm compliments of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of Healthcare For All and SEIU-ULTCW. The program begins at 7:00 pm.
Dr. Song’s topic will be Universal Healthcare: A Moral and Economic Imperative. Dr. Song is on the faculty at the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and was recently named the first visiting fellow in the Office of the Insurance Commissioner in the California Department of Insurance working on health policy. Physicians for a National Health Program is a non-profit research and education organization of 18,000 physicians, medical students and health professionals who support single-payer national health insurance. Dr. Song will address the moral imperative of universal single payer health insurance from an interfaith perspective as well as the economic imperative.
Singer-Songfighter, Ross Altman (card-carrying member of AFM Local 47) is known "to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable”. He will perform a few traditional Labor rally pieces and as a special treat; we’ll close our program with more spirit-lifting, Labor-themed, classic American Folk Music.
Resource tables will include Healthcare for All, SEIU-ULTCW, and Covered California (California’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act).
The purpose of VIC’s annual Labor Day program is to strengthen the connection between the religious and labor communities in support of common values. All are welcome and reservations are not required.
The mission of VIC is to unite people of conscience in interfaith action to build bridges of understanding, service and justice. Established in 1964, VIC operates four multipurpose senior centers, a Meals on Wheels program and a coalition of 12 independently operated food pantries in the San Fernando Valley. VIC brings together persons and congregations of many different faiths and secular organizations in interfaith action to alleviate human and social needs in the Valley.
