Sprouting his Wings

A trip to New York reminds one mom that her so is growing up.

Just a few weeks ago, my parents invited my oldest child to join them on a vacation to the east coast.

My son was beside himself with excitement; a chance to see New York City, Washington D.C. and a bit of the countryside.

He carefully planned out what he would wear for sight seeing and dining out, he made sure his camera batteries were charged and packed the journal his uncle had sent him; he was ready to go.

But I wasn’t ready, I shed a small tear knowing that this is just the beginning of him growing older and spreading his wings. I was thrilled for him to spend this time bonding with his grandparents; it would be an experience he will always remember, his first vacation on his own.

Yet it stirs up old memories for me. I can’t help but recall the times he wanted to go everywhere with me, from the market to the dry cleaners, we were inseparable. Now as he nears his 10th birthday, I realize how quickly my little one is growing up.

I know I still have many more years with him at home, but those first ten just flew by.  As he gets older and more independent I want him to be a strong individual who can make decisions on his own.

This adventure gave my son a taste of self-discovery, something that will help him as he grows older.

I know my job is to give my children a strong foundation so when the time comes they have wings to soar, until that day comes I will cherish the moments I have and make every day count.
