Calabasas Starbucks Files for Alcohol License

The chain's management wants to serve beer and wine at the Agoura Road location.

The on Agoura Road has applied for a license to sell beer and wine, one of the first California branches of the coffee giant to do so.

The chain's management team filed an application with the Van Nuys office of the state's Alcohol Beverage Control for a Type 41 license, which allows for on-site consumption of beer and wine.

Eater L.A. reports the application was filed last week and as of March 12, the document is listed as pending with no word yet on when that status would change.

Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson said the Agoura Road store was selected to serve beer and wine because it would relevant for the local customer base.

"i think the the Agoura Road store is a great example of that because it's a great place you can go to kind of connect and unwind with a friend or relax after a day of shopping," he said.

Hutson said the Calabasas location would sell primarily local wine, either by the bottle or glass as well as a few bottled beers.

If granted the license, Hutson said all employees behind the counter would be required to be at least 21 years old and receive comprehensive training on serving alcohol.

Beer and wine would be sold from 2 p.m. through closing on weekdays and noon to closing on weekends, he said.

Starbucks announced earlier this year that it planned to obtain alcohol licenses for four to six locations in Southern California and Atlanta.

A Coronado Starbucks for a beer and wine license, Hutson said.

Some locations in Portland and Seattle began serving beer and wine in 2010.

Andrea Streedain, a regional director for Starbucks, said 75 percent of customers at one of the chain's stores in Portland's Pearl District stopped by in the morning hours.

"We do know that 75-percent of our customers do come in before 2 p.m., so for us, this is a great way to expand into the afternoon and evening day part," Streedain told KGW.com.

But Thousand Oaks resident Bree Vivante, who regularly frequents the Agoura Road Starbucks, says she doesn't want to see alcohol being served at her favorite coffee spot.

"I think there's plenty of bars and plenty of restaurants around here that sell alcohol, I think Starbucks seems to be doing fine," she said.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.
