Calabasas High came to play Friday against high-powered Thousand Oaks, especially the offense. Kyle Zion brought it. Tai Kusakawa ran his heart out. Alex Varonos left everything on the field.
Unfortunately, none of it was enough in a 52-26 Marmonte League football loss to the visiting Lancers.
The game got off to an inauspicious start for Calabasas when Thousand Oaks' Avondre Bollar connected with Richard Mullaney for a 36-yard touchdown on the second play of the game.
The next two drives saw each team punting the ball. Then, Kyle Zion connected with Brett Schwartz on a screen to bring the score to 7-6.
The very next drive, in a refrain that would be repeated often on this night, it was Bollar to Mullaney again for another 22 yards, setting up an 8-yard touchdown run by Bollar. Mullaney finished with 11 receptions for 182 yards, giving him 81 catches on the season -- two shy of the school record.
Zion passed for 156 yards, Kusakawa rushed for 48 yards in eight carries, and Varones had five receptions for 66 yards.Penalties and special-teams mistakes were nearly as much to blame for the Coyotes' woes as the Bollar-Mullaney show.
At one point. Calabasas coach Larry Edwards said: "I get nervous when I see [the officials] having a conference. What are they going to do to us this time?"
Thousand Oaks extended the lead to 23 points at the half, and after the break Calabasas substituted liberally.
The win guaranteed Thousand Oaks a playoff berth with one week remaining. Meantime, Calabasas finishes against what figures to be an angry Westlake team that saw its 22-game winning streak end Friday with a loss to St. Bonaventure that forged a three-way tie for first with Westlake, St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian, none of whom play each other in the finale.

I suppose I should mention, for any would-be sports photographers, that these were shot with a Canon 7D and a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens (best 3rd party long lens out there, for my money). And that I began the night at ISO 2000 but was at 6400 before too very long. All the shots were taken in Raw mode and processed using Camera Raw, Photoshop and Noise Ninja.
